Response to Course Material- November 25

Recently in AP English, we have been learning about and reviewing the different eras of literature. We have only gotten through a couple of the slideshows, but so far they have been interesting and helpful for me. I knew of the different eras but I never really knew a lot of the details and ideas involved with them. My group had Victorian, Realism and Naturalism. I specifically looked up the details on Naturalism, and I found a lot of interesting information on it. I think it is so interesting to look at the different ways in which people looked at life and the world around them, and learning about the eras has been quite interesting. We are also supposed to be finishing up our first read of Ceremony. I still have to read kind of a lot, but I think I will get through it. I expected it to be very very difficult to read because Ms. Holmes said it was hard and to just try to get through it, but it hasn't been awful for me. I mean I have gotten a little lost at points but overall I think I am understanding everything. At least I hope I am... Overall the class is going alright right now.

  1. I had a similar experience with the eras of literature. I knew of most of them but definitely wasn't aware of the finer points and aspects of them. I was also assigned to naturalism. I was fascinated by the fact that naturalism stemmed out of realism, which was a reaction to romanticism. The interlinking was very interesting, and something valuable to be aware of when looking at works of literature and drawing conclusions and making connections. Ceremony was quite a book. I enjoyed it a lot and was moved by the dark nature of the work and felt that it holds a lot more that will be uncovered from the close read.

  2. I'm sure if you think you're understanding it better that you are :)
I read the first 3/4 of ceremony before break wanting to get it all out of the way, and wound up saving the last 1/4 for the last day of break!
And I also like books immediately more when we start close reading.

  3. I agree Ceremony wasn't as bad as I expected. But maybe she just built it up so much, it never could have been that hard. I think getting through the meaning and all of that will be a lot more difficult than the first read. I really like it though, which makes it easier to put work into. I really like the eras, too, particularly seeing how each era affected the next.
